Mixed-Use High Rise
Instructor: David Green, 2008.
This project for the Old Fourth Ward is part of a larger effort to find ways to rehabilitate the urban fabric of the area. The site for which this project is designed does not yet exist, but was created as part of an exercise in urban design preceding this project. The result of this exercise was a clean slate, so to speak. At the end of a phased process, all context would be removed from the site, save for the Atlanta Civic Center. Thus, the design reacts only to the new street layouts, and the site’s location within the city at large.
The main site issues to respond to were: the alley, the expected traffic on surrounding streets, and the topography. The alley bisecting the site was particularly difficult because it discouraged the creation of a courtyard—the solution being a dual-courtyard with services in between. In order to foster pedestrian interaction with the city, retail units are placed directly against the sidewalks on the busier streets, while the quieter street is loaded with the residential entrances, courtyard, and service access.
